August's Theme: Sky & Water

January 11 - Zoom

There is probably too much going on in this picture and may have been a better choice to keep in color against the gray and blue sky. I liked the perspective and action, but I think the background is just too busy. Hmph. Back to the basics. Any ideas on how I could have changed the angle or achieved a similar shot more successfully?

  1. Hard to tell without being there and seeing if this would work or not, but maybe if you shot from the right side of the rail instead of the left (just move under the top bar to the other side in other words), then the camera angle would be slightly different, you might not have the shadow as prominent on the ground (one less distraction), you would see a bit more shadow on the right side of the child's sleeves (a little more definition), and maybe because of the different angle a bit more sky in the background and less trees & swingsets, etc... Just some thoughts. I like the perspective and sharp contrast.

  3. Maybe if you could have shot underneath so you were seeing what he was looking up at while hanging on? I do like the angle though; I like the clean line of the bar, but I feel like instead of looking down when you get to the hands it draws your eye to the house behind.

  4. I like the perspective with the bar. Might be fun to see his face, although I'm not sure how you could physically do that from that angle. I would be a nice shot in color, especially if the sky was a nice shade of blue!

  5. Val- I too would suggest standing more to the right to elimate that shadow coming off the bars.....or a little trick would be to crop the photo to take it out. By cropping it you would elimate all the 'extra' background stuff and you could still get the effect of the bar from above.

    Cute puppy!

  6. I like the lines of the bars and the shot "works" for me, except for the blown out sleeves. If his whole head were in the shot it would be better, but I like the lines.

Cute dog portrait and the little boy too.

  7. Ok, I just want to virtual hug all of you. Love this feedback. Each comment is teaching me additional variables that I need to consider. I think I am going to add a color version of the shot to the post just for comparison's sake. I tried cropping it several different ways and I always lost balance and the action of his new skill.

  8. Val I am LOVING this black and white theme! I am totally new at shooting black and white and got to your blog thanks to Petra (dankjewel Petra!). Love the idea of posting the color shot with the b&w.
